Answering your questions

Still unsure about the effectiveness of mindfulness, or wondering whether it’s right for you?

I’m happy to talk through any concerns or questions with you or you can refer to the mindfulness course FAQ to learn more!

Mindfulness is the act of being fully engaged in the present moment without judgement. Because it is very difficult to sustain mindfulness by will, it is something we have to practise.

A main way to practise mindfulness is meditation. In this respect, meditation is the tool and mindfulness is the desired outcome and the overall approach.

Mindfulness provides tools grounded in simply paying attention and creating relaxed states. Relaxation methods can build your body’s resilience to stress.

Watching your emotions and thoughts without judgement can enhance emotional regulation, break thought patterns and undo beliefs.

When you boost your brain’s ability to pay attention and be aware, you can make choices that support your wellbeing and take healthier approaches to life’s challenges.

Each class is a combination of lessons, practice and discussion. Within the teachings you will learn various meditations and postures. We will start with the body scan and progress to meditations that have less of a central focus.

We will explore a specific topic every week to drive awareness and learn how to start applying mindfulness to core challenges and areas in life.

Week 1: Setting the scene – the techniques we will use, their origins and backing, the approach we will take

Week 2: Getting to know stress – recognising how it features for you, using mindfulness for stress reduction and management

Week 3: Transforming physical pain – how mindfulness can support your physical challenges, addressing it in practice

Week 4: Addressing emotional pain – changing your relationship with emotions, learning to let go

Week 5: The stress of success – recognising roles, self-beliefs, expectations & pressures, using mindfulness to loosen their hold over you

Week 6: Taking care of yourself – bringing mindfulness to your choices, integrating mindful moments, addressing priorities

Week 7: Elevated function – building confidence, becoming unstuck, showing the way to performance & personal growth

Week 8: Taking your practice forward – guidelines for long term integration, taking advantage of changes of trait

Lots of people feel relaxed after one meditation session. It is not uncommon to feel some benefits over a few days of daily practice. Or for others, it’s a few weeks. The mindfulness course has an 8-week duration as this is a proven time frame for seeing results from daily meditation practice.

The programme will transition you into independent practice. As you continue, you’ll likely to see more benefits over time.

We will focus on science-backed, practical mindfulness tools that create lasting changes on brain and body. We will share research around the many benefits regular mindfulness practice has been shown to give.

We will measure your perceived stress and life satisfaction before and after the course, to give you a tangible result to refer to.

We recommend a commitment of just 25 minutes of meditation each day. You are not trying to reach any “special states” during this time, it is the attempt that counts.

The mindfulness course will progress at a steady pace to include some mindful activities that will help integrate mindfulness into life and reaffirm your practice as a habit. The weekly classes act as motivators as you share your progress with others.

Practising mindfulness is a good use of time as it has been shown to increase functioning and productivity. With its benefits you can have the energy to do more and make the most of time. So if you are committed to making it a priority, you might even earn time back!

There are a few severe mental disorders that require a specialist teacher. Please reach out if you are unsure on its suitability for you.

Aside from this, mostly everyone can benefit from practising mindfulness if you are willing to commit to trying. It is a misconception that you need to clear your mind or achieve certain states to see results.

The mindfulness course is designed to progress practice at a steady pace, with lots of opportunity to address challenges, for example, if you struggle to sit still.

Perhaps you have had past experiences with resources or courses that haven’t paid off. This mindfulness course is designed to make you feel comfortable. Please reach out to discuss your concerns or to create something tailored to specific needs.

We keep things simple. You will need yourself and a small diary to take some notes post-practice as we introduce journalling as a supportive mindfulness tool.

When meditating at home, you just need a comfortable space. We will explore how meditations can be done sitting, standing, laying or walking. You might need some small cushions and a blanket for comfort.

Mindfulness is not a replacement for medication. It can complement other mental health treatments like medication and therapy.

A group mindfulness course provides an affordable way to improve mental wellbeing. It is an integrated approach, so you can continue using tools beyond the course.

There are lots of great resources now for guided audios and mindfulness tips! I started my mindfulness journey with Headspace, which I definitely recommend.

It is not necessarily a question of what resources are better but how you use them. This mindfulness course is designed for you to integrate practice into life and progress it over time.

You’ll often find similar techniques across different resources, but it is building a habit that counts. The guided meditations provided during the course have been structured to help you with this.

You may still decide to use other resources as you continue with your practice! There is no harm trying different resources to see what you like personally.

Addressing emotional pain is an important part of your mindfulness journey. Mindfulness can provide a comfortable and relaxing setting to face yourself. We are not aiming for you to feel distressed. You can go at your own pace when facing difficult emotions.

An important part of dealing with emotions is also taking healthy space, so the intensity and pace in which you deal with emotional pain is in your control.

Have a think about why else you might be holding back on giving mindfulness a go – I’d be happy to discuss your concerns. Often, it is those that feel negative and resistant that could really benefit!
